Cybersecurity and you!

Cybersecurity, this term has been thrown around a lot in recent years. Especially following mass cyber-attacks on a corporate or even national scale. Now while many of us have heard the phrase countless times, we may not know what it is. Or more importantly, we may not know what actions can be taken to improve our cybersecurity.

Cybersecurity

So, what actually is it? Cybersecurity refers to the practice of protecting internet-connected systems, including hardware, software, and data, from attack, damage, or unauthorised access. This involves implementing a variety of digital security measures that you are most likely already familiar with such as firewalls, encryption, and secure passwords to safeguard against cyber threats such as hacking, malware, and phishing.

What is cybersecurity:

Lairds is the only company that will conduct security audits and maintain networks for home users. We can install systems that monitor your networks, update you on issues and we can even provide remote support indefinitely. This will give you a chance of peace and security for the you and your family.

What Lairds can do for you:

Investing in cybersecurity is important because it helps protect the sensitive information and assets of yourself or your business from these cyber threats. Attacks like these can result in data breaches, loss of sensitive information, and subsequent damage to your organisation's reputation.

From a business standpoint, improving your cybersecurity can also provide a competitive advantage, as customers and partners may prefer to do business with organisations that can demonstrate a strong commitment to protecting their data. By investing in cybersecurity, you can reduce the risk of a successful attack, minimise the potential damage from an attack, and improve your organisation's overall security infrastructure.

Why you should invest:

• Yahoo: In 2013 and 2014, a data breach led to stolen email addresses, phone numbers, and birth dates of all 3 billion of its user accounts.
• Marriott International: In 2018, the hotel chain suffered a data breach in which the personal information of around 500 million customers was compromised.
• Sony: In 2011, Sony's PlayStation Network and Qriocity streaming services suffered a data breach, leading to the personal information of 77 million customers being compromised.
• Uber: In 2016, the ride-sharing company suffered a data breach, meaning the information of 57 million customers and 600,000 drivers was compromised.
These are just a few examples of the many major companies that have been victims of cyber-attacks and data breaches. Even the most well-protected companies can fall victim to a cyber-attack, so it's crucial for all organisations and individuals to take cybersecurity seriously and take the necessary steps to protect sensitive information. Cybersecurity has always been important, but it has gained increased attention in the public eye over recent years due to the growing number of high-profile cyber-attacks and data breaches. With individuals using so many internet-connected devices and having sensitive information stored and shared electronically, it has become easier for cyber-criminals to target individuals and organisations.

Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the shift to remote work and online activities. This has also increased the attack surface for cyber-criminals to exploit, making cyber security even more crucial for not just organisations but for individuals as well.

There have been many high-profile cyber-attacks and data breaches involving major companies over the years:

When did it become so important:

1. Use strong and unique passwords for all accounts and enable two-factor authentication whenever possible.
2. Keep all software and operating systems up to date with the latest security patches and updates.
3. Educate yourself and your co-workers about common cyber threats, such as phishing scams and social engineering, and how to recognize and avoid them. Read more about it here.
4. Use anti-virus and anti-malware software to protect your devices and networks.
5. Use a firewall to protect your network and limit access to only authorised users.
6. Consider hiring a cyber security professional to conduct a security audit and identify vulnerabilities in your systems.
So, what can be done about this in the here and now? And that last step is where the team here at Lairds can be of assistance. Our technicians are cybersecurity specialists with a great knowledge of computer networks and systems, as well as a range of security technologies and best practices to keep you or your business secure.

If you are interested in our cybersecurity services, we would love to hear from you. Give us a call or drop us an email and take the steps to improve your cybersecurity today.

What is an AV company?

One of the most common asked questions to our employees when they tell their friends and family that they work for us is "What is an AV Company?". We've realised this is a question that more than just family and friends hold. Therefore, in this article, we are going to tell you all about what an AV company is and does.

AV Company, Lairds

What is an AV Company?

An AV Company is responsible for supply and installation, and in some cases, operation of equipment that directly or indirectly process sound or visual media. When we talk about audio-visual technology, we're referring to the synchronisation of audio equipment such as speakers and visual equipment or video walls, controllers, processors, and matrix switchers. Therefore, it is responsible for all things motion picture, radio, presentations, tv programs, conferencing, live performance, and more.

Some AV companies will focus exclusively on providing specific pieces of AV equipment to venues and people, whereas other larger outfits provide AV hire services as part of their broader spectrum. In other words, an AV company often wears many hats.

What Services Do AV Companies Offer?

The services that are offered by an AV company, will vary from business to business. Some businesses will specialise in hire / supply and setting up AV installations for events. Whereas, other businesses will not only offer AV equipment for hire, but they will include the supply and installation of equipment in residential or commercial buildings.

What you require from an AV company will be dependent on the nature, scale, and the location. For example, if you are a business looking to hold small conference calls, then all you may need is a small system. This includes a projector, screen and a conferencing microphone and speaker. Or, if you're a family-man looking to provide your home with a full entertainment system and security. The equipment you're then looking at is speakers, CCTV, projectors, lighting and much more.

Ease and Access of Audio-Visual Technology

During the pandemic, as we all withdrew into our homes, the AV industry came to the rescue. By bringing the office into the comfort of our own homes, this gave a more flexible approach to working. This ensured that everyone was able to continue working, communicating, and connecting with each other. Done via digital means never thought of before.

What are the most decisive AV industry trends?

Like all industries, an AV Company will follow trends. Trends allow for the creation of big waves in the future, and allow for expansion and more exposure. The most popular AV trends that we have in 2022 are;

  • Improvement in Wi-Fi Technology.

It is generally thought that Wi-Fi is pretty two-dimensional. But anyone with thick walls and slow broadband speed will tell you otherwise and that improvement is well over-due. In the most recent decade, most of us searched for the newest router for the fastest Wi-Fi speeds that we could get our hands on. But Wi-Fi is now moving into the Wifi 6 phase. These routers came into use in mid-late 2020 and now allow us to connect to even more devices in a household with far fewer delays than ever before.

  • Collaboration of AV and Cloud-Based Technology.

With the help of AV technology, organisations are able to take their work over to a virtual space while still working as if they're in the same room as each other. This means that users can still work together and collaborate on tasks, even if they're sat at opposite ends of the world! Due to the pandemic, the partnership has been supercharged as we all transferred operations between Teams, Zoom, and other conferencing platforms. The advancement in this partnership has meant that companies can increase their engagement, improve communication and continue to operate from the cloud, meaning that the morning commute to the office is no longer a total necessity.

  • VR and AR.

One of the best parts of the AV industry is that it has seemingly facilitated the impossible.  VR and AR technology allows us to immerse ourselves into different worlds and settings. Allowing us to walk around and interact with our surroundings without leaving the comfort of our living room. VR and AR technology is looking to replicate in-person communication. By creating software that detects and replicates facial expressions and tracks eye movement. This might point to a future where we can interact with each other in almost in-person settings; even if the two participants are situated in different countries.
