We are based in Troon and Edinburgh is a regular run for us, a little under two hours each way. Because of that we plan Edinburgh work as full days rather than short calls – survey, install and commissioning are grouped so you are not paying for travel more often than necessary. If a job is small enough that travel would dominate the cost, we will say so rather than quote it.
Yes, and much of the New Town and Old Town falls into one or both. The rule of thumb is that anything altering the external appearance or the historic fabric may need listed building consent, and that is a decision for the council rather than for us. We design for reversible fixings and routes that avoid original plaster, cornicing and panelling wherever possible, and we will tell you when something needs consent instead of quietly proceeding.
Not at all, but it changes the method and it is worth knowing before you budget. With no cavity there is nowhere to drop a cable inside the wall, so runs go through floor voids, existing service risers, or discreet trunking picked up in the skirting or coving. We survey the actual route before quoting, because on solid stone the route is the job – guessing it is how fixed-price quotes turn into variations.
Only around the common parts. Anything inside your own flat is yours to decide. Work affecting the shared close, the roof or the building fabric usually needs the agreement of the other owners under your title deeds, and any external aerial, dish or camera almost always does. We will flag anything that needs your neighbours before it becomes an awkward conversation on the day.
Yes, and for Edinburgh it is usually the sensible order. Lay your room out to scale in our Design Studio and send it over, or book an online consultation – between the two we can usually agree the shape of the project, and roughly what it costs, before anyone drives through.
