Lairds of Troon · Technology engineers
Lairds design, install and calibrate private cinema rooms and media rooms throughout Scotland. Family-run from Ayrshire since 1999. The engineer who draws the room is the engineer who commissions it.
We work across Ayrshire, Glasgow, Edinburgh and the west of Scotland. Most of our cinema rooms sit within an hour of the workshop at Kilmarnock, which matters more than it sounds: it means the engineer who commissioned your room can be back on site the week you ask.
Recent rooms include the cinema room at Kilmacolm, a garden retreat cinema, a renovation in East Ayrshire and the popup cinema at Dundonald Castle.

We utilise the latest 4K projection, Dolby Atmos audio, and professional acoustic treatment to transport you to the heart of the action. Whether you want a dedicated room with tiered seating and star ceilings, or a discreet media system integrated into a living space, our experts tailor every detail.

4K projection and Dolby Atmos are the easy part. The room is the hard part. We model the acoustics, set the sightlines and the seating rake on the drawing, and specify lighting and wall treatment to suit the screen rather than the other way round. That holds whether the room is a dedicated theatre with tiered seating and a star ceiling, or a media system built discreetly into a room the family uses every day.

For the ultimate movie buff. We transform spare rooms, garages, or basements into acoustically treated private theatres with tiered seating, star ceilings, and projection systems that outperform the local multiplex.

Cinema quality without compromising your interior design. We specialise in “Hidden Technology” motorised screens that vanish into ceilings, artwork that rolls away to reveal TVs, and invisible plaster-over speakers.

Take your entertainment to the next level. With 120Hz refresh rates and zero-latency gaming modes, our systems put you on the track and in the game. Perfect for match days and immersive gaming sessions.
We measure the room, ask how you actually watch, and tell you what the space can and cannot do. If it will not make a good cinema we say so at this stage, not after the plaster is on.
Sightlines, seating rake, speaker positions and acoustic treatment are resolved on the drawing. Where we are working alongside an architect this happens at RIBA Stage 3, before the walls close. Anything introduced after Stage 4 is not design, it is retrofit, and the client pays for it twice.
Cabling, containment and power go in with the other trades, coordinated against the programme rather than negotiated on the day.
Screen, projector, loudspeakers and control. The room is then measured and corrected to target rather than set by ear.
You get the measurements, the documentation, and one number to call.
Put in your real room size and watch seating, screen size and sightlines resolve in front of you - before anyone visits.

RIBA Stage 3, or as close to it as you can manage. The decisions that matter are structural: ceiling height, riser positions, where the rack lives and how it is ventilated, and where the cable routes run. All of those are cheap on a drawing and expensive once the walls are up.
Either works. A dedicated room gives you control of the light and the acoustics, which is why it performs better. A media room in a space the family already uses is the more common request, and the design job is then about hiding the technology rather than showing it: motorised screens, plaster-over loudspeakers, artwork that rolls away.
Frequently, and they often make the best rooms because you are not fighting existing windows. Insulation, damp and ventilation need resolving first, and those are builder questions rather than AV questions, so we prefer to be in the conversation early.
Yes, though the approach changes. Wireless behaves differently against stone and lath, chases are often not permitted, and containment has to be planned around what you are allowed to touch. We survey the fabric before specifying anything.
Yes. Acoustic measurements and system documentation are issued at handover as standard, not on request. It means the room can be checked by someone other than us.
