Lairds of Troon · Technology engineers
Lairds are a Lutron HomeWorks dealer, authorised for both lighting control and window treatments, designing, installing, programming and supporting HomeWorks QS throughout Scotland. Family-run from Ayrshire since 1999. Our engineers are Lutron HomeWorks trained, and the engineer who commissions your system is the one who comes back to it.
We work across Ayrshire, Glasgow, Edinburgh and the west of Scotland. Lutron lighting runs through a good deal of our work rather than being a line on a price list: Greystones at Kilmacolm, a modern mansion, a modernised Victorian house, and commercially at Material Source Studio in Glasgow and the Billy Connolly gallery at Castle Fine Art.
Dealer authorisation matters more than it sounds. HomeWorks QS is not sold or programmed on the open market: the software, the commissioning tools and the support route are only available to authorised dealers. It means the system can be properly commissioned, altered later, and supported by the people who installed it, rather than left as something nobody can touch. Our authorisation covers Lutron window treatments as well as lighting, so blinds and curtains run on the same system rather than bolted alongside it.
HomeWorks QS is a wired, whole-property lighting control system. Instead of a switch per circuit, every circuit is dimmed and switched from a central panel and recalled by keypad, app or schedule. In practice that means three things worth having.
Fewer plates on the wall. A bank of six switches becomes one keypad with engraved buttons. In a room with several lighting circuits that is the difference between a wall of plastic and a considered finish.
Light levels that are set once and repeat. Scenes are commissioned to measured levels rather than guessed at, so the room looks the same every evening without anyone adjusting anything.
Load and schedule control. Lights that are not needed are off, dimmed circuits draw less, and the system reports what is running. Where a client cares about consumption this is the part that pays.
It also drives motorised blinds and curtains, and integrates with heating, audio, video and access control. Full technical detail is on Lutron’s own HomeWorks pages.
The straightforward case, and the one where the system costs least, because the cabling goes in with everything else. We work to the architect’s drawings and coordinate the panel position and containment with the M&E package.
Harder, and the honest answer varies by building. Where a full rewire is not realistic we specify a wireless Lutron system instead rather than force HomeWorks into a house that cannot take it.
Restaurants, galleries and offices, where lighting has to change through the day and be operated by staff rather than by an installer. Scenes are set to be simple at the keypad and locked down behind it.
We walk the building, agree what each room has to do, and produce a circuit schedule. If a lighting designer is involved we work to their plan rather than around it.
Panel location, load schedule, keypad positions and engraving are resolved on the drawing at RIBA Stage 3, before first fix.
Cabling and containment go in with the other trades, coordinated to the programme.
Circuits are tested, scenes set to measured levels, keypads engraved and labelled, and the system handed over working rather than nearly working.
Programming documentation, panel schedule, and one number to call.
Yes. Lairds are an authorised Lutron HomeWorks dealer, covering both lighting control and window treatments. We design, install, programme and support HomeWorks QS throughout Ayrshire, Glasgow, Edinburgh and the west of Scotland, from Marathon House, Olympic Business Park, Kilmarnock.
RIBA Stage 3, before first fix. HomeWorks is a wired system: the panel needs a position, a supply and ventilation, and every circuit has to be routed back to it. Decided on the drawing it costs almost nothing. Decided after the plaster is on it means chasing walls that have just been finished.
Often, yes, but it depends on the wiring. Where rewiring a whole house is not realistic we would usually specify a wireless Lutron system rather than pretend HomeWorks will fit. We survey first and tell you which is the honest answer for your building.
Yes, and it is frequently the better choice, because keypads replace banks of switches and reduce the number of chases and back boxes you need. Wireless behaves differently against stone and lath, so we survey the fabric before specifying anything.
Yes. HomeWorks QS handles motorised blinds and curtains as standard, and integrates with heating, audio, video and access control. Where a project already has Control4 or RTI, the lighting sits underneath it rather than competing with it.
You get the programming documentation, the panel schedule and one number to call. The engineer who commissioned the system is the one who comes back to it.
