What Lutron window treatments are
Motorised roller blinds, honeycomb and Roman shades, wood blinds and curtain tracks, made to the measured opening in Lutron’s fabric range and driven by Lutron motors that are quiet enough for a bedroom. They run from the same keypads, app and scenes as the lighting, wired or battery-powered depending on the house, and Lairds design, install, programme and support them as an authorised Lutron dealer.
Why we specify them with the lighting
A blind on its own app is a gadget. A blind on the lighting system is part of how the house works. An evening scene lowers the shades and brings the lights down together from one keypad press; a morning scene raises them with the sun; a cinema scene blacks the room out before the projector comes on. Shading also does real work on heating and cooling, closing against low summer sun and keeping heat in through large glazing on winter evenings, which is why we treat it as part of the energy design rather than decoration.
Wired or battery
In a new build or a full renovation we specify wired shades: power at the head of each window and a route back to the panel, decided with the lighting before the ceilings close, with recessed pockets formed while the structure is open so that nothing is visible but the fabric. In a finished house we specify battery shades: no chasing, plaster and decoration untouched, and the same keypads and scenes. Battery life depends on the size of the shade and how often it moves, and Lutron publish a figure for each product, which is the number to ask for.
Fabrics and light control
The range runs from sheers that keep the view through to full blackout, in a wide choice of weaves and colours. In bedrooms and cinema rooms the light gap at the edge of the shade matters as much as the fabric, so it is decided early, with the pocket or fascia detail. Samples are chosen with the interior designer against the finishes in the room, not from a catalogue on a phone.
How we work
Survey and measurement, specification with the architect or interior designer, first-fix drawings for the electrician, installation and programming by our own engineers, and a support agreement afterwards. Window treatments are usually specified as part of a wider HomeWorks or RA3 lighting package, and we install them on their own where a house already has a Lutron system. We work across Ayrshire, Glasgow, Edinburgh and the west of Scotland, and elsewhere where the project justifies the travel. Questions we are asked
When should window treatments be specified in a build or renovation?
At the same time as the lighting, and before the ceilings close. Wired shades need power at the head of each window and a route back to the panel, and recessed pockets have to be formed while the structure is still open. Specify late and the choice narrows to surface-mounted fascias or battery shades.
Can motorised blinds be fitted in a house that is already finished?
Yes. Battery-powered Lutron shades need no mains cable and no chasing, so plaster and decoration stay intact, and they run from the same keypads and app as a wired system. Battery life varies with the size of the shade and how often it moves. Lutron publish a figure per product, and that is the number to ask for rather than a rule of thumb.
How quiet are they?
Quiet enough that in a room with any background noise you will not notice them running. Lutron publish a decibel figure for each motor. If the room is a bedroom or a cinema, ask for that figure at specification rather than take a description on trust.
Will the blinds work with the lighting?
When both are Lutron, yes. They run on one system, so a single scene sets both, and an evening scene can lower the shades and bring the lighting down together from one keypad press. Where the lighting is another manufacturer, integration is usually possible but becomes a design decision rather than something you get for nothing.
Are the fabrics made to measure, and what is the range?
