Lairds of Troon · Technology engineers

Talk to a technology engineer before you commit to anything

A video or phone call with the engineer who would design your system, not a salesperson working from a brochure.

Bring a cinema room, a golf simulator, a network that keeps dropping, a lighting plan that has stalled, or a whole house still at drawing stage. Forty-five minutes is usually enough to know whether what you want is realistic and roughly what it costs.

Most projects change shape in that first conversation. Finding out that the screen wall is on the wrong side of the room, or that the ceiling void will not take the containment, costs nothing now and a great deal after first fix.

What the call is for

  • A straight answer on feasibilityWhat the room will physically take, before anyone draws it.
  • A realistic budget rangeWhat projects of this shape actually cost, with the expensive decisions named rather than buried.
  • The order of workWhat has to be settled before first fix, and what can safely wait until second.
  • A written summary afterwardsWhat we discussed, what we recommend, and indicative costs.

Before the call

Come with rough room dimensions, even paced out. Better still, lay the room out to scale in the Design Studio first and send it over, and the call is spent on decisions rather than on measuring.

What it costs

A first conversation is free. The three services below are the chargeable pieces of design work that sometimes follow it. Nothing is charged on this page: we confirm the scope with you first, then invoice.

Design Layout — equipment positions marked on your floor plans£150 plus VAT
System Quote — the system specified and costed£299 plus VAT
Two-hour consultation — booked design time with an engineer£499 plus VAT

You will never be billed for a conversation you thought was free.

What to expect from an online consultation

What actually happens on the call?

A conversation rather than a pitch. We ask what the room is for, what frustrates you about how it works now, and what you are hoping to spend. You show us the space on camera. By the end you should know whether what you want is realistic, roughly what it costs, and what the sensible first step is – even if that step is not us.

How long does it take and what does it cost?

Allow about forty-five minutes. Most first conversations cost nothing; where a consultation involves genuine design work – drawings, layouts, a specification you could hand to another installer – that is chargeable, and we agree it with you in advance. You will never be billed for a conversation you thought was free.

What should I have ready?

Rough room dimensions are the single most useful thing, even paced out. Better still, lay the room out to scale in our Design Studio first and send it over – then we spend the call on the interesting decisions rather than on measuring. Photographs of the space and any existing equipment help too.

Will you still need to visit?

For anything being installed, yes, eventually. A survey is where cable routes, wall construction and access get settled, and none of that can be judged reliably over a camera. What the online consultation does is make sure the visit is worth both our time, and it often removes two or three site visits from a project.

What do I get afterwards?

A written summary of what we discussed and what we recommend, with indicative costs. If your project is a good fit we will follow it with a proper proposal. If it is not, we will say so and point you somewhere more suitable – that is a better outcome for both of us than a quote nobody wants.
