Hutchesons City Grill, Glasgow: an audio upgrade, DJ points and a rack in the bell tower

Rusk & Rusk asked Lairds to bring the audio at Hutchesons and the 158 Club up to date and give it some weight, without disrupting one of Glasgow’s busiest dining rooms. We did it from the bell tower down.

The building

Hutchesons Hall on Ingram Street is one of Glasgow’s landmark buildings, and under Rusk & Rusk it became Hutchesons City Grill, a restaurant and bar with the 158 Club alongside it. The audio system had dated. The owners wanted it brought bang up to date with a bit more bass, and the atmosphere and the image of the place protected while we did it.

Having investigated the existing system, the decision was out with the old and in with the new.

What we designed

The heart of the system lives in the bell tower, which is an interesting place to work: cable routes had to be found and run safely, and the resident pigeons kept at a respectful distance. Every cable in the building was tested and the faults fixed, and there were fewer of those than we feared. We gave the client something he had never had, a full overview and schematic of the system as a reference for maintenance and future upgrades.

On the distributed audio we upgraded a number of amplifiers and installed the equipment the zones needed to carry low frequencies properly: Sonance Mariner subwoofers, positioned carefully in the three zones and driven by a Sonance multi-zone amplifier with audio management. New permanent DJ points went into both venues, so staff and guest DJs have a reliable, comfortable connection instead of a temporary one. A few CCTV additions went in while we were there, the bell tower was tidied, and all of it was done with no disruption to the daily running of the venue.

Lairds continues to provide regular support, so the owner’s AV and network systems are looked after. See more of our work for bars and restaurants.

What we handed over

An audio system with the weight the rooms needed, permanent DJ points in both venues, a tested and documented cable infrastructure, and a schematic the client can hand to anyone who works on the building after us.

An audio system that has dated?

We will survey what is there, test every cable, and tell you what to keep and what to replace. Then we do the work around your opening hours.
