Scottish Veterans Awards 2022, Edinburgh: PA and stage support from a veteran-owned crew

Mark and Johanna were invited to the Scottish Veterans Awards at the Village Hotel, Edinburgh, as guests and nominees. When they heard the organisers needed a PA, Lairds signed on to work the event as well as attend it.

The brief

The Scottish Veterans Awards recognise what veteran-owned businesses do for the communities around them. Lairds, a veteran-owned company listed on the Veteran Owned UK directory, were invited as guests and nominees. On hearing that the event needed a PA, Mark put the Lairds team on the job: a suit-and-tie event in Edinburgh, a long way from Ayrshire, with multiple speakers and a full awards running order.

What we did

The team chose a Soundcraft Ui24R mixer, run from a tablet, so that the engineer could adjust the sound from anywhere in the room rather than from a desk at the back, and active loudspeakers with their own amplification, which keep the technical area clear of racks and cabling. The crew stayed in the hotel so that they could set up on the morning of the event, support the organisers’ dress run, and be on hand all evening. During the ceremony one technician managed the audio while the rest of the team worked as stagehands, handing out awards and keeping the running order moving through its many speakers.

The result

An awards evening that ran to time with clear sound for every speaker, and a Lairds crew that understood the etiquette of the room as well as the equipment. The same care goes into every event we work: the dress code, the running order and the people, not only the kit.
