What it took

Involvement from consultation and design through the build programme to handover

The building

The Ayrshire Hospice redevelopment rebuilt and refurbished the hospice to give patients private rooms, better clinical support and spaces where families can spend time together. It is the most significant project of its kind our team has supported, and one where the technology had to serve people at the hardest point in their lives without ever drawing attention to itself.

What was asked of us

Technology designed in from the start rather than added afterwards; systems that staff could run without thinking about them and that patients and visitors could use without instruction; reliability and clarity above everything; and an infrastructure the hospice could build on for years without disruption. The hospice staff told us what would make a difference in daily use, and that shaped the specification more than any product sheet.

What we did

Design, with the design team

We joined at the consultation and design stage, working with the architects, Microtech on the IT infrastructure and the hospice teams, so that displays, conferencing and control were integrated into the drawings and into McLaughlin & Harvey’s build programme rather than fitted around them.

Installation and commissioning

Televisions in patient bedrooms, giving each patient control of their own space. Video conferencing in the boardrooms and for patients to see family who cannot travel. RTI control so staff manage several systems from one place. Multi-room video distribution so lounges and private rooms can be used flexibly. All of it on an infrastructure specified to take new systems later.

Training and handover

Staff training and documentation were part of the job. A system in a hospice is only finished when the people who use it every day are comfortable with it.

What it means

For patients, more comfort and more control over their own room, and family on screen when they cannot be in it. For families, the reassurance of staying connected. For staff, one set of controls that reduces the workload rather than adding to it. For the hospice, facilities that match its reputation and an infrastructure that will take what comes next.

We are an Ayrshire business. The hospice looks after our own community, and this is the project our team is proudest of.

Building for a community?

Hospices, clubs, charities and public buildings get the same engineering as everything else we do, designed in from the first drawing. Tell us about the building and the people who will use it.
